I wrote “This is Our Science” about the last 7 years of my life touring, traveling, drifting, and working. About the friends I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned, and the stories I’ve lived on this endless exploration into my art, my mind, and the world at large. Throughout this adventure, there has always been a place that I kept my stuff while I was gone; sometimes in boxes in a basement, sometimes on a bookshelf in a bedroom, but I have never had what I would consider a real home. I always said, “the world is my hometown, and all the countries are just neighborhoods I like to visit”, but that definition never felt right to me. Something was missing.
It wasn’t until I really started writing the album that I took time to sit back and reflect on this life lived without an anchor, and it was then that it became abundantly clear that home may never be a place for me. I won’t find home in a building, or on a patch of land, or in my warm bed. Home will be in my stories, my memories, and more than anything…my friends. When it came time to make merch for this album, I didn’t want to just slap my name on some crap, have the lowest bidder silk screen it all, and ship it off to you. So I looked to my stories for inspiration, to my history for focus, and to my friends for their skills and creativity…and this is what we all came up with:
-Jamie Lyn designed a necklace to protect you, sharpen your spears, and open all your brown paper packages tied up with string.
-Kendall Tull-Esterbrook designed you a bandana to mop your brow, bandage your wounds, and give you a better grip on that twist off beer cap.
-I, with the font work of Adam Garcia, made you a sharp looking t-shirt, because hey…who doesn’t like to look sharp, right?
-Lastly, and certainly not least, a whole host of friends and I made you a soundtrack; something to sing a long to throughout all of your own explorations, adventures, and stories.
I had my friends silk screen the soft stuff in their garage, I’ll etch the brass stuff in my bedroom, and my homies at the record label will put it all in a box and ship it off to you…wherever you are. Whether you scrape your nickels together to preorder the super nice package, or you just download the album off itunes, the motivation and inspiration behind all of these products is the same as the motivation and inspiration behind all of these songs on this album. It is easy to lose sight of home when you are out there in the big wide world, but as long as you carry a bit of that home around your neck, in your heart, or just stuffed in your back pocket, wherever you go, you’ll never be lost.
